    Browns ready for rival Steelers

The game to be played between the Browns and Steelers Sunday in Cleveland Browns Stadium would probably be getting a lot more attention were it not for that other game being played in Ohio this weekend.

Here are two teams, one supposedly going nowhere and one supposedly good enough to rally and defend its Super Bowl championship, yet the Browns and Steelers have identical 3-6 records. What's more, the Browns beat the Raiders and the Falcons -- two teams that beat the Steelers.

Even before some of his teammates had stripped out of their uniforms in the Georgia Dome, Braylon Edwards used some colorful language to announce the Browns were out for revenge after being humiliated 41-0 on Christmas Eve last year.

''You don't beat somebody 41-0 at their own house,'' Edwards said. ''We're coming for the Steelers. That's point-blank, period. We're coming after their (butts).''

In the good old days when Jack Lambert and Mean Joe Greene played for Pittsburgh, such taunting by a Browns player would have drawn wrath and scorn.

Then Browns cornerback Ron Bolton would have worked up a good amount of spit and released it in the face of Steelers receiver Lynn Swann.

This is the age of political correctness, though, so in Pittsburgh Steelers receiver Hines Ward politely declined when reporters gave him a chance to fire back at Edwards.

''I can't comment on that,'' Ward said. ''What happened last year was last year. It's Pittsburgh vs. Cleveland. We hate each other. But I won't get into a war of words. We'll do our talking on the field.''

Fans might shake their heads and silently scold Edwards for popping off like he did. After all, he didn't even play in the 41-0 drubbing. Three weeks earlier his rookie season crashed and burned when his right ACL was torn while trying to make a leaping catch in the Jacksonville game.

Since the Browns returned to the NFL in 1999, there has been a noticeable lack of extra enthusiasm to play the Steelers. The Arizona Cardinals might as well have been the opponent. It's not that the Browns weren't motivated to play football, but it was like, ''Game 10 on the schedule -- who do we have? Oh, Pittsburgh. We have to be ready. That's a pretty good team.''

The Steelers are still a good team, even if their record does not reflect it. They are four games behind the Ravens in the AFC North with just seven to play. They do play Baltimore twice, so they are not out of the race yet. The Steelers and Ravens play in Baltimore a week from Sunday and then in Pittsburgh on Christmas Eve.

The Browns would be the first to tell the Ravens not to expect any holiday cheer in Pittsburgh.

Edwards remarks and vows of other players not to forget being embarrassed at home in a stadium taken over by Steelers fans is an indication maybe Browns players are coming around to the idea there is something to this rivalry.

Players had Monday and yesterday off. They get down to work today preparing for the Steelers.

''41-0. That's all the guys are going to remember this week,'' running back Reuben Droughns said before clearing out Sunday.

Unlike Edwards, Droughns did play in the Christmas Eve game. He just did not play effectively. The Steelers led 20-0 at halftime and 27-0 with nine minutes to play in the third quarter. Consequently, Droughns carried the ball only 10 times for 36 forgettable yards.

    Frye looking for some revenge

BEREA -- Egos weren't all the Steelers bruised on Christmas Eve last year when they embarrassed the Browns 41-0 in Cleveland Browns Stadium.

Charlie Frye left the locker room battered and bewildered after being sacked eight times and fumbling four times. By a stroke of luck, only one fumble was recovered by Pittsburgh. Just one week earlier, Frye played well enough to help the Browns beat the Oakland Raiders, 9-7.

Frye and the Browns have been working long and hard to prevent a repeat of one of the worst drubbings the Browns have ever suffered.

As a rule, teams never look past one opponent to prepare for another. But Frye admitted Wednesday the Browns -- Frye in particular -- have been getting ready for the Steelers since the summer. They will put that work to the test when they meet the Steelers at 1 p.m. Sunday in Cleveland Browns Stadium. Both teams are 3-6.

''I've never felt this bad after a game and I never want to feel it again.'' Frye said in the aftermath of the game last year. ''I'm going to circle this game on the schedule next year. I've never season a defense like that.''

''They were bringing guys from everywhere,'' he said. ''There was no place to go with the ball. I'm going to spend a lot of my offseason looking at their defense and trying to figure it out.''

Frye concluded the Steelers are still a good defensive team. The Browns might catch a break because safety Troy Polamalu has a concussion. His playing status will be determined later in the week.

The stars were not aligned for Frye in the Christmas Eve game. The Steelers had won two straight and were charging toward the playoffs and eventual Super Bowl champion as a wild-card team. Mike Pucillo was the Browns' center. With Casey Hampton at nose tackle for Pittsburgh, it was not a match-up that favored the Browns.

Linebacker Joey Porter had three of the eight Steelers sacks. It was a game that helped convince general manager Phil Savage the Browns needed a new left tackle. On Sunday, Kevin Shaffer will try to keep Porter off Frye's back.

''We had some guys filling in for our starters last year,'' Frye said. ''Our line will be in full force Sunday. We fixed some of the protection issues that caused us problems in that game.''

Despite the eight sacks, an indication he was under duress all day, Frye did not throw an interception. Ironically it was the last time he was interception-free until last Sunday when he avoided throwing a pick in Atlanta.

Frye's passer rating against the Steelers was 64.4. His passer rating was lower against the Saints, Bengals and Panthers this year.

''I think I'm a lot different guy than I was then,'' Frye said. ''That was almost a year ago. I have more starts under my belt. I have more confidence and experience.

''I think I'm improving every week. My goal is to get better looking guys off and putting the ball where I want it -- the little things it takes to play quarterback.''

During the week leading up to the Super Bowl in Detroit last year reporters in Detroit asked Porter about the game against the Browns. Porter said the Steelers got into young Frye's head.

Steelers coach Bill Cowher said during a conference call Wednesday the difference between Frye last December and now is ''night and day.''

''I don't know whether we got in his head,'' Cowher said. ''He was a young player. We were able to make a few plays early. I don't think we were that much better.

''This is an experienced player (now) who is more comfortable in the system. He has playmakers around him. To me, there's no comparison between the team this year and the one we played a year ago.''

The Browns were 5-9 before playing the Steelers in December. They are three games below sea level this year.

I hope this game ends in a zero-zero tie so that you can both stay in the cellar.

I'd say both are going nowhere this year.

Well thanks, your compliments are always joyful to read.

I know that Charlie Frye and the Browns will not get embarrassed like they did last year at home 41-0.

That is a bit of an understatement.

Despite the score the Browns are annihilating the Steelers. The game should be 21+ but a missed field goal and a touchdown that should have happened didn't

The interceptions are not his fault in this game. His recievers are not holding onto the balls and leave them up in the air. That one INT that Holly returned for a TD was to Holmes.
