Pittsburgh Steelers running back Duce Staley had his NFL career came to an unceremonious end Monday afternoon.
Staley, a former Airport High School star, was released by the Steelers after having played in just one game this season for the defending Super Bowl champs.
The 10-year veteran was active for just one game this season and did not have a carry from the line of scrimmage. Staley signed a 5-year, $14 million contract with the Steelers in 2004 and was going to be the Steelers' go-to running back with Jerome Bettis starting to show his age.
Staley got off to a fast start with the Steelers, averaging more than 101 yards through the first seven games of the 2004 season.
But Staley hurt his hamstring in the eighth game and never got his starting job back from Bettis.
The former South Carolina star finished the 2004 season with 830 yards and averaged 4.3 yards an attempt.
In 2005, Staley hurt his knee in training camp and was beat out by Willie Parker for the starting spot.
He had just 38 rushing attempts and caught six passes a year ago.
He took $1 million salary cut, from $2.5 million to $1.5 million, to play this season and was activated for the Steelers' opener against Miami.
Staley began his career with Philadelphia and had seven very productive years with the Eagles. He recorded three, 1,000-yard seasons with the Eagles.
His best season came in 1999 when he rushed for 1,273 yards and caught 41 passes for another 294 yards and a total of six touchdowns.
In 114 career games, Staley has rushed for 5,785 yards with 24 TDs on 1,430 attempts. He also had 287 receptions for 2,587 yards and 10 TDs.
