Both sides say Edwards won't be returning

    By Kevin Acee

KO OLINA, Hawaii – It has long been a foregone conclusion that 2006 was linebacker Donnie Edwards' last season as a Charger.

Neither the team nor Edwards' side officially said as much, however, until yesterday.

But with free agency looming, Edwards' agent confirmed yesterday the sides have not talked and that Edwards will leave when the free-agency period begins next month.

“We're not doing anything (with the Chargers),” Tom Condon said.

Chargers General Manager A.J. Smith later said the team sent Condon a letter two days after the team's playoff loss to New England last month and said they would not be pursuing Edwards.

“What Tom Condon told you is correct,” Smith said. “Donnie will not be part of the San Diego Chargers this year.”

It is clear the decision to let Edwards go was made quickly. Smith said he has not contacted the agents of any other potential free agents regarding the team's plans.

Yesterday was the first time Smith spoke of Edwards since July 31.

Although Edwards led the Chargers in tackles each of the past five seasons and led all NFL linebackers with 17 interceptions since 2002, Smith had tired of Edwards' repeated attempts to rework his contract.

Smith put Edwards on the trading block in April, and the Chargers and New Orleans Saints came close to a deal in late summer.

It was in June that Smith said: “It has become crystal clear to me that Donnie is very unhappy with his contract and has been for a few years. We have always appreciated Donnie Edwards' playing ability, and we believe he is well-compensated. However, because of his unhappiness we will do everything possible to find him a new team – a team that will appreciate him the way he would like and will compensate him with an amount that will make him very happy and content.”

Anyone else think Donnie Edwards is one of the most underrated linebackers in the league?

Watch the Ravens game to see why the Chargers should have locked him up long term awhile ago.

chargers fans have known about this since last offseason, we even tried to trade him before the deadline in week 6

matt wilhelm will step right into his spot, a guy who is better in run coverage and adequate in pass coverage

donnie after all was just a safety playing lb, whose run D sucked. he literally got dragged on most of his tackles, and he wanted to be paid like a top lb even though he was making 3 to 4 mill per year. he has tried to get his contract renegotiated for the past 3 offseasons despite being under contract through 06. Someone is going to overpay for him, my guess is dallas saints redskins or pats with pats being the least likely cause they don't seem to overpay for FAs.

he turns 34 in april...good riddance i say and have been saying for over a year.

And here I thought Edwards was the face of the Chargers! And you're giving him a good swift kick in the rear.

I think the Chargers(AJ Smith) thought this same thing about Rodney Harrison.............and look how that turned out.

As good a job as AJ Smith has done with the Chargers..............I really think he sometimes undervalues his veteran players.

Maybe it's just me, but when I think of the Chargers, I immediately think of LT. Merriman also springs to mind. Not Donnie Edwards.

yes.. he was when he was in KC as well. Funny how the Chiefs let him go because they thought he was asking to much. Then they went a season and realized they REALLY needed a LB... then hired a LB for more money than Donnie was asking.. and he sucked! Edwards is really a playmaker.. he's a stud. He's wanted out of SD for a couple years now.

I wish we had room for him here.

I completely disagree with you here. He's been more than just a safety... and has always been a playmaker. A guy that makes the turn over.. one that can cover the TE.. and has his nose on the ball. True he's hitting 34, but the guy has been yoru best LB for years.

edwards the face of the chargers? that's LT...edwards is a guy whose been a notorious douchbag to the fans in autograph sessions and who has argued with the front office to be paid higher than his already high salary, every offseason for the past 3 years, he's like a mexican version of TO in the offseason, at least he shuts up during the regular season though, but he's not good at run support, the chargers will be alot better on D without him, trust me.

difference with rodney was he was injury prone and not even playing as well as donnie is, in sd (hell he's still injury prone) but we all know how NE turns crap into gold, they got to the afc title game and had a 21-3 lead on the colts IN indy, with reche caldwell as their #1 wr lol

he hasn't wanted out of sd, he's wanted into sd's wallet haha, the guy wants to be paid like a top lb despite the fact he's about to turn 34, and he's below avg against the run.

if you want the best pass coverage ILB in the nfl though, donnie's your man, as long as you don't mind him getting dragged on tackles.

he is a ballhawk i'll give you that, but i've seen enough of his bad run coverage and knowing how old he is, i'm not willing to give him the huge contract and bonus he's been looking for...let the redskins do it haha
