  • Why are they allowed to do this?

Did the NFL change its rule about not owning franchises in other sports in different markets than the football franchise?
Milwaukee Bucks co-owner Marc Lasry has reached an agreement to sell his portion of the Bucks to Cleveland Browns owners Jimmy and Dee Haslam for a $3.5 billion valuation, sources told ESPN.

I think the better question is; why shouldn't they be allowed? The NFL is doing very well, franchises are at record values and the Super Bowl is possibly the most watched game in the world.

    Pro Football Talk.NBC Sports ... October 2018
But to answer your question... YES the NFL has updated their franchise rule many time since around the 1960s. A major amendment to their rule was in 1997 related to Huizenga's ownership of the Miami Dolphins and other sports franchises. The most recent change was in 2018..."Stan Kroenke can take back the Nuggets and the Avalanche from the family members who were running them on his behalf." "the NFL finally has scrapped the rule that prevents owners from owning non-NFL teams in markets containing other NFL teams. The rule resulted in Kroenke, upon buying the Rams, transferring ownership of the Colorado Avalanche and the Denver Nuggets to members of his family."
Now, Kroenke can own non-NFL teams in any market. And so can any of the other NFL’s owners. "It also ditches the outdated notion that a football team in a given market “competes” with other sports teams in that same market."

In my view any competition is good. The NFL should need to keep a relatively good product for its consumers. If their product is not very good to watch (which in my opinion is increasingly getting poorer and poorer) they may lose customers to other sports that do have a better product. I think in reality all the major sports are getting worse and worse but there are other things to do than watch millionaires play games.

Thanks for answering the question. I was just curious. Didn’t remember the rule change.
