    Bears | Urlacher fined
    Wed, 18 Apr 2007 12:32:16 -0700

The Associated Press reports Chicago Bears LB Brian Urlacher has been fined $100,000 by the NFL for wearing a hat promoting a sponsor not authorized by the league during media day at the Super Bowl.

Sorry, I know this isn't about the Bronco's, but I was especially upset when I read this. They fine Urlacher A HUNDRED GRAND for wearing the wrong damm hat?

I am pretty sure he could go out on the field on gamday wearing a helmet and a dress and not get fined that much.......

When players are doing things to deliberately try to hurt other players on the field and they get fined what, like 15K?

Seems very excessive, just goes to show that when it comes to their revenue, the NFL doesn't mess around. Injuring other players or acting a fool during a game in front of a national audience; that's ok, here's a little slap on the wrist, but not calling DADDY to make sure your hat is cool before you leave home, WATCH OUT!!!

I would fight to the end on this if I were Urlacher.......

We all know the NFL's top priority is money. This just further solidifies it.

Don't mess with the money. The NFL has contracts stipulating what players can wear during games. If the NFL doesn't enforce that policy, it could cost them a lot more than $100,000. Urlacher should have known better.

I saw it and thought- "Hmm.. Urlacher drinks it, I better drink it.. wait, Tiger and Jordan drink gatorade.. oh man, what do I do?!?!"

Still funny as hell though. I wonder what he'd get fined if he had a "Powerade" had on?

Well, the NFL takes money from sponsors to guarantee that the NFL and all of it's players will only wear or use X product during certain official functions. These fines are there to guarantee it to protect the investment of the sponsors. There's probably no leeway in the wording of the contracts that help pay the salaries of the players.

Do I find it relatively excessive? Of course... relative to other fines, it is...

But it IS a business, and so are the businesses that pay for sponsorships.

I think they went too far but you also have to realize this is a big business and these guys make a lot of money, both the NFL and the players.

To me it's a small sacrifice.

I always try to relate to things like this by looking at myself. If my boss wanted to pay me $60 mil over the next 8 years and required me to not wear a certain brand of clothing or make appearances drinking a certain drink then hell, I'm cool with that.

              Where do I sign?

                  .

                  Good points.

The punishments that were laid down to Henrey and Pacman were heavy handed but necessary and I definitely agree with them. The problem I have the Urlacher fine is that if they are going to fine a player that much for wearing a hat, then they should fine a player AT LEAST that much for say, stomping another player when he is down, or starting a fight on the field. These are the things that lead to the tarnishment of the NFL's good name, not Urlacher wearing the wrong hat......

I don't like the "wack jobs" either, hopefully the new rules around player conduct will help that.

And it has nothing to to with if he can afford it or not, we all know he can....

So if the NFL gets millions for the commercials, and millions from endorcement of the company, how much do you think the NFL would have paid Urlacher if he was wearing the RIGHT hat, even though he is at the game as a bystander, and the camera's were on him basically because he is famous, and they need to fill airtime......I be I know how much......ZERO!!

I understand business, blah blah blah, but I think they are sending a very wrong message here.......

--- Forgive me if I'm wrong, but don’t all NFL fines paid by players go directly to the NFL's charity, the United Way, regardless if it is an un-tucked jersey or a late hit ???

--- The NFL is a business, but the dollar amount of fines accrued is mere pittance compared to the rest of the NFL's revenue sources.

he can fight, but this is something that is STRICTLY against NFL policy. THis is one of the things they write specifically about to the NFL players and the NFLPA. The reason its so much? Because the players are getting money for wearing those endorsements. So they are taking away a larger part of the money they earned by wearing an unauthorized sponsors name.

You say they have their priorities messed up. But you DO realize that the NFL is a PRIVATE company, right? One that is based PURELY on making money? The NFL is no different than any other coorporation that has employees. They are there to make money, and have their policies in order to keep employees from wearing just ANYTHING they want while employed with the NFL. This keeps them from wearing sponsorships from something that may embarrass the NFL, political statements, or anything else that may be deemed inappropriate.

Urlacher doesn't stand a chance on winning this.

I remember they fined Tim Rattay for wearing a hat that had a cross on it during a post game interview in the locker room.

Their No.1 priority is, I would imagine, to make money so I'm not completely in shock ya know?

PFT says that $.60 of every $1 in advertising goes to the players. So if gatoraid stopped being the sponsor it would not only cost Brian but the whole league as well. The business of the NFL cannot let that happen, so they made this point.....
