  • Bengals sign Myers....

CINCINNATI (April 20, 2007) -- The Cincinnati Bengals signed veteran defensive lineman Michael Myers to a two-year contract.

Myers, a 10-year pro who was an unrestricted free agent, started every game last season for the Broncos. The 6-foot-2, 300-pound tackle led Denver's line last season with 80 tackles. He had two sacks, a forced fumble and two fumble recoveries.

He was drafted from Alabama as a fourth-round choice by Dallas, and played with Cleveland before Denver obtained him in a 2005 trade.

Wow. I actually didnt know he had 80 tackles..... thats good production for a DT. Good pickup for the Bengals though....

He seemed to play with all-out effort and lots of heart, which is a lot more than I can say about a lot of NFL players.

I'd like to wish him good luck in Cincy, and thank him for his contributions.

I was really hoping we would keep him aswell. Now we REALLY need some more depth at DT.

            80 Tackles?!?!

I thought Warren was the better DT and Myers was sub-par or mediocre at best...

            Guess I thought wrong.

Speaking of NFL.com... their own site has it recorded on his stats that he had 57 tackles.

Sounds like an inconsistancy to me, but watching last year, I can assure you he did not sniff 80 tackles, not even close.

yea, the article on nfl.com had him at 80... but yes, the stats do have him at 57.... I didnt beleive that he had 80 tackles either, but you never know with conflicting reports on different pages....

Regardless of whether it's 80 or 57, I think it's a good move on the part of the Bengals, but not for the reasons you're probably thinking. I think this move is going to lead to other moves with cap relief in mind.

John Thornton is a big-time caphit, and he's an underachiever to boot. If we can cut his contract, we might actually have a shot at making another splash in free agency before the offseason is over. I'm still hoping that Al Wilson will be available for a reasonable price, and I think that wishful thinking becomes a little more realistic when a move like this is made.

As a players, Myers is a high effort player, that won't give up in run support and will pursue plays to the end. Unfortunately he does not stand up well on the LOS, so when its time to mount a pass rush or stop a run, he will commonly get pushed back and abused, especially by some of the bigger guards in the AFC North.

I doubt you'd get Wilson though, Hartwell is a more likely and more able player and he does have a thing for Marvin Lewis.

Well, we'll see. We still need to cut Thornton before any of the rest of it can happen. Mike Brown doesn't spend money that he doesn't have, which means that we can't do the contract magic that your owner likes to work with your players, restructuring year after year. Hartwell would be a nice addition as well.

We lost some good depth. And you gained some good depth.

Shouldn't be a starter though, in either place, IMO.
