For years people (mostly rival fans) have joked about how they'd like to see Al Davis live forever. They/we mused that the Raiders were bad in large part because of Davis' meddling and that they would continue to suck for as long as he lived.

I wonder how it will be remembered in the future. I really think the Raiders are a team on the rise, and they undoubtedly have been very bad for quite a while now. It's interesting that wedged between these vastly different times will be the death of Davis - seemingly confirming some truth in those rival fans' jabs - but in reality probably just a coincidence.

As Broncos fans I think we are extremely fortunate to have such an adversarial adversary within our division. Sure, everyone in the league "hates the Raiders", but it's different for us. In most fans' hearts they are still THE rival. They're the quintessential enemy, a team you absolutely love to hate. The perfect antagonist playing their role to perfection in this script of our most beloved football entertainment. Brilliantly done - and extremely rewarding as a fan, witness and consumer of this game.

And who's responsible for it all?

Al Davis... Thank you, and R.I.P, Sir. You won't easily be forgotten.

If anyone is interested, I went over to the Raider message boards and sent our thoughts.

They were actually surprised at how classy our fanbase is being. Apparently the Chief fans have not been so nice.

A lot of people make jokes about Al, but the truth of the matter is, he is one of, if not the most recognized sports owners in American.

He build the Raiders, he is the Raiders. Hate him, love him, hate the Raiders, love the Raiders. Doesn't matter you respect him for what he did with that team.

He was a players owner, not a modern day players owner, but a true player. Meaning players that play the game because they love football not money.

That type of owner is Jerry Jones, he's a money lover players owner.

Jones will never be on the same level as Al Davis.

The 2 biggest owners in american sports all come from the NFL. Al Davis and Dan Rooney.
    Rest In Paradise.

    Mr. Al Davis,

The NFL and especially the AFC West has forever changed with your loss. You helped make one of the best rivalries in football. As a Broncos fan I would like to take a moment and recognize your organization for making football great for me and my family. Your fans say a lot about what you have made for the state of California with your team. Your fans have stuck with you through thick and thin and my heart and prayers go out to them and your family. Your fans are some of the most Iconic figures and recognizable in all of football. Their passion is a direct reflection of you and what you built.

To all Raider fans you are in our thoughts. Your team will go on and the memories of Al Davis will be remembered by me for a lifetime. We wish you the best and hope you win every game for the rest of the year in exception of your Nov. 6 game.

Wow. He was a pillar in the history of the NFL. Imagining a league without him is very difficult.

Thoughts and prayers to his family, friends, players, and fans who've known him for so many years.

Barrel Man was honestly someone only we as Bronco Fans really thought something of, but Al Davis's act showed that he could see the bigger picture and put people over the team's rivalry. RIP Al Davis, football rebel and innovator.
