Kamerion Wimbley leads NFL in Sacks

It may be folly to freak out over preseason NFL statistics. But in the waning days of August, preseason NFL statistics are the only thing we have over which to freak out.

To that end, Raider Nation can't help but be a little excited that one of the newest Oakland Raiders is leading the NFL right now in sacks.

After two whole games that do not count, Raiders' defensive end Kamerion Wimbley has 4.0 sacks to his credit -- tops in the NFL. Wimbley was acquired in the off-season from the Cleveland Browns in exchange for a third-round draft pick.

Wimbley scored all four of these sacks in Saturday night's 32-17 win over the Chicago Bears. In fact, they were all in the first half.

"I got one early and I was energized," Wimbley told the San Francisco Chronicle. "I was able to use some successful moves one-on-one, and I came free. I have never had four sacks in a half before."

But he'll try again Saturday night at 6 p.m. PDT, when the Raiders square off against the San Francisco 49ers at the Oakland Coliseum for their third preseason game.

Wait untill Wimbley drops into coverage. You will be amazed at how well he is at tripping and falling when he has to cover anybody!

Wimbley is a one trick pony. He has only one method to getting to the QB and every NFL team knows how to stop him. So, he'll get lots of sacks in the preseason. But, when the games really matter, he won't get many sacks and he will be a liability in coverage.

So, enjoy his amazing preseason play, because that's the only time he will do anything.

            I'm just telling the truth.

They are amazed with his 4 sacks in the preseason? I wonder how amazed they will be when he gets 4 sacks a season.

Also, I love rain. It is very relaxing.

For once, Charlie... I wouldn't mind you being right.

Edit: No offense, guys... I wish you the best against everyone else and all... love to see the AFC West be feared again. Still... hard to actually hope you get a monster pass rusher on that already pretty scary defense...

Outside linebacker Kamerion Wimbley is looking like a steal for Oakland Raiders

NAPA -- Depending upon whom you speak with, the Cleveland Browns traded outside linebacker Kamerion Wimbley to the Raiders because: he was a one-move pass-rusher, he peaked his rookie season, or he was valuable enough to fetch a good draft pick in return.

Raiders coach Tom Cable said he can't recall the specifics of the March trade, whether the Browns contacted the Raiders or if the Raiders sought out Wimbley.

"I'm just happy we got him," Cable said. "I'm not (talking) around it. It just seems so long ago. I don't remember all that. "... I'm glad that they didn't want him if that's the case, and he's ours."

For now, the Raiders are reaping huge dividends on a deal that sent a third-round draft pick -- one acquired in a trade from the New England Patriots for defensive end Derrick Burgess -- to the Browns for the outside linebacker.

Wimbley had four sacks in the first half of Oakland's 32-17 exhibition win over the Chicago Bears on Saturday and answered a lot of questions about why the Raiders traded for the 2006 first-round draft pick.

"I don't know if it so much impressed me," Cable said. "I see it every day."

Wimbley, 6-foot-4 and 255 pounds, goes about his business with the look of someone who isn't fazed by much.

That makes sense when you consider he endured a childhood in which his parents divorced, and he was uprooted from Alaska and moved to Kansas.

He ultimately was adopted by his grandmother and lived with her during many of his formative years. Later, he moved in with his father.

Football became a way for Wimbley to escape his worries. His hardscrabble childhood also steered him toward a path where he could help himself and others. He majored in social work at Florida State and makes a point of working with inner city youth.

He's also working hard on making an impression on his new team, though it took some getting used to changing uniforms.

"I was somewhat surprised. I'll admit that," Wimbley said. "But when a new regime comes in, new management, you have to kind of expect anything to happen. ... I saw that they had really good talent here, so it was a good move for me and a good situation for me to be in."

The Raiders made overhauling their linebacking corps a high priority during the offseason. Trading for Wimbley was the second piece of the process.

The first part of the transformation came last season, when the Raiders moved Trevor Scott from defensive end to the weakside linebacker spot occupied by Thomas Howard the past four seasons.

Wimbley was assigned the strongside position that has been a revolving door of sorts the past several seasons. Ricky Brown, Sam Williams and Robert Thomas started games there in recent years.

Selecting Rolando McClain in the first round of the NFL draft in April completed the makeover, with mainstay Kirk Morrison being shipped to the Jacksonville Jaguars so that McClain could step in as a rookie.

Scott made a smooth transition to linebacker in short order. McClain arrived amid huge fanfare based on a stellar collegiate career at Alabama. Few knew what to make of Wimbley.

It's not often teams part ways with the 13th pick of the draft after only four seasons, as the Browns did with Wimbley. The Raiders knew all about Wimbley's ability based on two games in Oakland in which he recorded two sacks.

Wimbley had 11 sacks his rookie season. His totals slipped to five in 2007 and four in '08. Former Raiders defensive coordinator Rob Ryan played to Wimbley's strengths last season, and Wimbley responded with a team-high 6½ sacks.

Browns coach Eric Mangini said trading productive players is part of overhauling a rebuilding team.

"He's a team player, a hard worker, all of the things that you look for, but as you look at the team, we were 5-11," Mangini said the day after the trade. "We have a lot of things that we need to address."

Wimbley was a major steal for the Browns.

His 4-6 sacks a season really paid off especially when the QB's just ran into him. Hey, wait a second. That's not how a "pass-rush specialist" is supposed to work. A pass-rusher is supposed to get TO the QB. Not the other way around.

You are cheering for him now and calling him a "steal". Thing is, other than his rookie year, Wimbley was a failure.

Thing is... he's got more talent around him in Oakland. Our secondary will make it much easier on him considering our DB's can cover longer than anyone could in the Browns' secondary.

Anyways, you flip flop A LOT Charlie. http://forums.denverbroncos.com/show...36&postcount=8

I guess he's not so talented anymore.

I am a moody person and I like familiar faces.

After players have been with a team for a few years, you get used to them.

Even though Wimbley was not much of a pass-rusher, he still provided some pass rush. However, Roth easily outplayed him last year and since he is back, the talent at LB is better than last year. Wimbley was extremely inconsistent. He wouldn't even do well against teams with a poor offensive line. The "talent" wasn't the issue in the defense. The problem was the offense was so weak that the defense was always forced to defend a short field.
