    Running Backs

here's what i think may happen

    RB
    Who Will Stay

Travis Henry- Obviously isnt going anywhere
Mike Bell- I dont know about him yet
Cecil Sapp- has been impressive and can play Fullback too
Andre Hall- has the speed that none of the rest of our backs have, very impressive Camp

    Bye Bye

Selvin Young has had a great preseason but willl likely go on the practice squad
Cedric Cobbs- was brought in for depth and likely wont make cuts

    Fullbacks

    Who will stay
    Kyle Johnson- Great recieving fullback
Troy Fleming- will be kept for blocking

    Bye Bye
Paul Smith- even though he was a FA signing he has been very unimpressive

I dont think Selvin will clear waivers, he looked to good last night.

Just a guess, but Im thinking Henry Bell Young, with Johnson and Sapp as FB.

Sapp can go either direction, again just to save a roster spot.

I think we need Hall though because of his speed

I don't see much of a need for an RB with only speed... otherwise we'd have kept Tatum.
    Somebody pressure the QB!!

Hall will go back to the Practice squad.

    Our RB's will be
    T Henry
    M Bell
    S Young

Sapp will more than likely be moved back to FB, or kept as the 2nd or 3rd RB.

    FB's will be
    K Johnson
    T Fleming
P Smith will be kept because he's a special teams ace.

    RBs

    Henry
    Sapp
    Young

    FBs

    Johnson
    Smith or Fleming

Sapp is currently the primary back up at RB, that's where he'll stay unless someone beats him outright for it. You can't keep yanking the guys chain. They gave him a shot last year at RB and put him back at FB. They shouldn't do it again unless someone clearly proves to be better.

Young, from what I've read about him, seems to have more talent and speed than Bell. If that's the case, I don't see how Shanahan cuts him. If Sapp gets moved back to FB, I could see Young and Bell as the back ups at RB, but otherwise, you have to go with the talent.

Either Smith or Fleming will be the back up FB because Sapp will be the primary back up at RB unless someone beats him for the job.

Man, after Henry this becomes a tough call.

Bell looked pretty good last year for a rookie but he doesn't look to have progressed much from last year. He runs too upright for my taste but has a lot of zeal for the game. He's a great story but I'm not convinced he should make the roster because of the potential of some of the other guys.

Sapp seems to be in the coaches' favor but I'm not entirely sure why. Yeah, he can play both RB and FB but I'm not sure that warrants a roster spot. If another fullback behind Kyle is also a good special teamer I wouldn't mind seeing Sapp cut loose.

Selvin Young would be a great candidate for the practice squad. But if he has another good game next week I'm not sure he'll clear waivers. If we want to keep him for his future potential then we might have to sacrifice Bell or Sapp, or both.

Andre Hall is a guy who I really wanted to see play this preseason because I think he could be a really good contributor, both as a backup and a 3rd down specialist. But since I haven't seen him in a game yet that is purely based on reports out of training camp.

So, here's my radical running back trio:

    Travis Henry
    Selvin Young
    Andre Hall

"What?!" you might say. I know, not a single guy from our 2006 active roster. But Mike Bell could deserve the #3 spot if Hall isn't deemed worthy by the coaches.

Now, that's what I'd probably do but this is what I think the Shanny will go with:

    Travis Henry
    Cecil Sapp
    Mike Bell

...and they hope they can put Young and/or Hall (if still eligible) on the practice squad if they clear waivers.

Again, it seems like we are loaded with talent (albiet some unproven) at the running back position this season. Putting a guy like Selving Young on the PS you risk him being picked-up by another team though waivers. Several teams were already eyeing him after the draft.

So, does a guy like Mike Bell have any trade value in the market today??? Maybe we can get a 2008 draft pick. I think he is talented but will not get the opportunity this year to show that talent. So we keep:

    Henry
    Sapp
    Young
    Hall

At fullback, I think Paul Smith makes the team because of his special team abilities along with Kyle Johnson.

That seems reasonable to me except that I doubt we'll keep 6 total running backs. I believe we usually we go with 3 tailbacks and 2 fullbacks. If we keep Sapp it means we'll probably not keep Smith. If we keep Smith, Sapp would be the guy I would cut.

But who knows? We could keep 6 this year.
