    The Swear Filter

    I think that the swear filter needs to be refined a bit as it comes to something when you can't even type the name of a Bronco legend without having half his name asterisked out.

    It's not Steve A****er's fault that he has an unfortunate run of letters in his surname, it certainly isn't swearing.

    I thought that was odd as well. After the forum change, I had to change the name of my video sig, as the filter said it contained innappropriate language and it would not appear. It allows his name on the sig but not in the video title of the sig.

    Poor Steve.

    Unless I'm reading it wrong, I didn't even know that was a bad word.

    EDIT: Nevermind, was reading it wrong!

    I don't know as I never felt compelled to type the swear word on its own.

    I'm sure that Steve's surname wasn't asterisked out by the swear filter before the upgrade though.

    OK - you think that is bad - I had to look up the 4 letter word in the dictionary, as I had no clue what it meant

    well to filter it seems strange IMO...its not like someone actually just
    typed out the word...if anything filtering it out brings attention to it.

    I agree - I had no idea that the filter would take out certain letters in a word

    I'm not a vBulletin expert (but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night ), but it has to do with the way they have setup their profanity filter.

    If they simply put a list of words in the filter like:
    ned
    ad
    IV

    Then it looks for those letters or words inside of other words or on their own. Any time ned, ad, iv show up, they are replaced with *, resulting in:
    T***
    KC L**y
    Denver Nat**ve

    If they had setup their filter like:
    {ned}
    {ad}
    {IV}

    Then, Tned, KC Lady, and Denver Native would display fine, but if ned was typed by itself, then *** would replace it, if ad was typed by itself, then ** would replace it, etc.

    I am not sure if this was done on purpose or as an oversight. The downside to using {} to surround the profanity is that certain words such as blank head ans blank hole, etc. are words that would appear if {} was put around the curse part of those words, so in order to catch those words, they would have to all be specifically entered into the profanity filter.

    So, instead of simply putting ned (assuming it was a curse) in the profanity filter and having all of the ned___ variants filtered, they would have to specifically list all of the curse words that contained ned.

    Anyway, enough of the vBulletin tutorial, I am going back to my cozy (albeit smelly) room at the local HIE.
