    CU 2009 Offseason Thread

    The other one just died I supose....

    Now that this recruiting cycle is over, I think it is time we move over to an offseason thread until the 2009 season starts.

    It is gonna be an interesting offseason especially with some of the position battles that we will have going on.

    So I think I will begin with a couple of things that I would like to see happen this offseason....

    1. Demetrius Sumler converts to FB. I really like Sumler, but given the talent we have at RB (Scott, Stewart, and Polk) I would like to see him give it a go at FB. He is about 230 or so right now, so getting up to 240 or 245 would be the ideal goal. He could become one of those RB/FB type guys who we could use in a very dynamic way.

    2. Cody Hawkins establish himself as the starter. I really like Cody mainly because of his qualities as a leader. I feel that, with the potent running game we could have, he is the best guy to have at the helm. This past year, I feel like her was screwed up by a injury ravaged offensive line. If you give Hawkins a healthy O-Line, and a healthy core of running backs, he is the one IMO. That being said, I really want him to come out and declare himself as a Junior in the spring. Basically show that he is the right one for the job.

    3. Andre Simmons to qualify. We need this kid. I have been dying for a 6-3 200 wide reciever for the longest time.

    More to come....

    Hawk supposedly said Lockridge WILL compete for the starting Running Back Slot. This is very surprising, and says alot about Lock. Nice.

    He also told someone that was at the luncheon that it's open season for the Starting QB spot.

    Andre really reminds me of DJ Hackett. Really excited to see him play. (If he qualifies)

    Polk just had a shoulder surgery. So he should be good to go in Spring Ball....I hope. I'm excited to go to the spring game. VERY interested to see how the OL competition shapes up, and who takes Girthys spot.

    Sadly, it's still a ways away from the Spring game, but by the end of the month I'll have a preview written up position by position.

    Can't seem to sleep...

    CU Football 2009 Preview

    Position By position

    QB: My projected depth chart
    1. Hansen
    2. Hawkins
    3. Ballenger
    Overall I feel pretty confident about this position. Hansen has some experience, and once again Hawkins is the underdog. If Hansen has the playbook opened up to him this year, we can expect good things. He wasnít given much of a chance to throw the ball in 2008, and got pretty one dimensional. IF he is capable of throwing the ball effectively, he will start. We canít have him in there using the belly options all the time in 2009.

    HB: Projected depth chart
    1. Scott
    2. Speedy
    3. Lockridge
    4. Polk
    God the depth at this position is ridiculous. I have to think, since Darrell has a year under his belt and knows he has to come in, in shape and ready to play hurt I think he has the edge. The kid is ridiculous. I think the tandem of him and Speedy will be amazing for years to come.
    FB: Time between Sumler and Behrens. I agree with most everyone here. We have such a log jam at RB itís hard to imagine Sumler getting any PT at all this year. I would love to see the FB utilized more this coming year.

    WR: Projected depth chart
    1. Simas
    2. Simmons
    3. McKnight
    4. J-Fly
    5. Blackmon
    My how much rides on both Simas and Simmons being eligible. We NEED these guys to come in and be ready to play. As much as I love Josh, he needs a number 1 receiver to gather the attention, so he can come in on 4 WR sets and create freakish mismatches. McKnight is solid, and the bonafide slot receiver in my opinion. He has always come in through the clutch from us, and I expect no less from him this coming season.

    TE: Geer and Deehan. Would love to see these guys utilized more on offense. It seems ever since Hawkins has come to CU their role in the offense has dropped off tremendously.

    OL: Projected Depth Chart (Two deep)Ö.

    LT: Solder, Givens
    LG: Head, Adkins, Bahr
    C: Iltis, Eastburn
    RG: MTM, Behrens, Bahr (Yes, I realize I put him twice)
    RT: Miller, Dannewitz
    With how annihilated we were at this position last year, it is SO nice to see some depth here. Iím stoked knowing we have some great players, and knowing Miller and MTM got Medical Redshirts. This offensive front is young, yet experienced as well. MTM played great for a true freshman up until his injury and I felt I saw significant strides on Solders play throughout the year. Canít go wrong with Miller, and Itlis is the wildcard. Would anyone agreeÖ..Simon may not Red Shirt if Itlis isnít eligible?

    DL: Projected depth chart (two deep)
    DE: Obi, Kasa, Beatty
    DT: Cunningham, Goree
    DT: Nuckols, Bonsu, possibly Pericak? Didn’t he get moved?
    DE: Herrod, West, Rippy or Major possibly

    I think we will indeed struggle up here, and Kasa will get serious PT. I can easily see him starting by end of the season, but I think to start off he will be coming in pass situations. He’s certainly got the intangibles and size. Cunningham played fantastic when he got PT last year and got tutored by Hypolite and Nicholas. Nuckols will be a force with his size, and I love the addition of Bonsu. I will stick to my guns, and I think West will get PT this year.

    LB: Projected Depth Chart
    LOLB: Mohler, Beatty
    MLB: Major, Smart
    ROLB: Katoa, Rippy

    I apologize if I got it mixed up, but from what I remember Mohler played on the left of the defense this year….
    Anyway, no question Mohler starts. He was a force towards the end of the year. Major I think gets the nod at MLB because he, well he’s undeniably a better player than Smart, despite the fact that I like what Smart brings and a couple plays he made throughout the year stick out in my mind. Katoa, providing he’s all good to go and eligible in the fall is another promising guy we got waiting, and I think he will be a great player. Rippy looked the part from his Rivals video, and I’m excited to see him play this upcoming year(s).

    CB:
    1) Jimmy Smith
    2) Chappelle Brown
    3) Ben Burney
    4) Jalil Brown

    There’s no denying the props I give Jimmy Smith, ever since his INT against Nebraska in 2007 I’ve been a fan. My dad meeting him at the airport, and from what I heard about him sure doesn’t hurt either. Sounds like a great guy, and I’m obviously biased. Chap played great through the year, and I’m interested to see how Burney comes off an injury plagued season full of surgeries.

    S:
    FS: Mahnke, Orms
    SS: Wright, Perkins, Hicks

    Anyone agree here? Sure you could put Hicks before Orms, but I wanted to make sure I included Orms. I do not think he redshirts, and will play ST right away. Overall I’m excited about Mahnke, and that hit he made on the NU receiver last year around half time still gives me chills. Love having a ranging safety out there that lays the lumber.

    P: DiLallo
    K: Goodman, Davis…w/e just make FGs please!

    KR: Josh Smith, obviously. If he has the chance to focus soley on ST (for the most part) he can be a real asset and get rid of the boneheaded plays (see UT game last year).

    I’m VERY excited to watch this team play. Now for the sched…

    Colorado State (My prediction, W)
    @Miami, Ohio (My prediction, W)
    Wyoming (My Prediction, W)
    @WVU (My prediction, W)
    @Texas (My prediction, L)
    Kansas (My prediction, W)
    @KSU (My prediciton, W)
    Mizzou (My prediciton, L)
    Texas A&M (My prediciton, W)
    @Iowa State (My prediction, W)
    @Oklahoma State (My prediciton, L)
    Nebraska (My prediction, W)

    Overall, I can see us winning our OOC games. CSU is always a challenge and if Wyoming beats us then we HAVE to be worried (Sorry Snap, we just do). WVU will be a test, but I think we go 4-0 (no Kool-Aid, son) Obviously a loss to Texas, as they beat our ass last year. KU we WILL BEAT this year. Damnit, I’m tired of losing to these guys. We had that in the bag last year, despite injuries. We need to cut down turnovers. KSU, we beat and they will be without Freeman…arguably the best offensive player they’ve had since Sproles. Mizzou, yeah they don’t have Chase Daniel. But that was a beat down of epic proportions last year (cue our local Mizzou fan boy in 3…2…1). A&M…we HAD this game last year, and I predict a huge game for Speedy. Revenge game for him, for a cheap horsecollar tackle that ended his season last year. Iowa State, why not? No Todd Blythe….and providing the season went as well as I hope it will, I see us having no problem. Loss in Stillwater, they lose key offensive players but it’s still a good team overall. I hope we give em a game. We gave NU a game last year, despite being battered by injuries and they won. No doubt about it, they won. They took advantage of the looks they got and we didn’t. Sorry, no Ganz, no dice. This is with the team on PAPER, granted it’s going to change due to injury. But I have faith in this team for a 9-10 win season.

    Looking forward to the season guys, and can't wait to read some reactions. I'm going to try and sleep....again.

    lol jordy nelson? he was with KSTATE not iowa state. and he graduated LAST year .
    anyway, we definitely have the talent on our roster to go 9-3 but after watching helfrich's so-called offense last year and hearing his comments about wanting to run 11 widereceiver sets every play, i'm not completely sold on this season being a good one. it will be good, as long as helfrich doesn't screw it up. but that's a big if

    I meant Todd Blythe from 2007, dude consistently killed us year after year.

    Good points overall Str8jacket....

    By my estimation, we should be well on our way to an 8-4 season if we stay healthy. The schedule really does favor us next season, with the tougher sect of the Big12 North at home this time around.

    As for the offensive line....don't sleep on Sioune Tau. The guy is a beast and could be a force at OT or even if moved to OG. Furthermore, I disagree with you about C. My money is on Behrens making the switch. This is because he has experience playing there in high school from what I recall, and at least he was in the starting lineup last year so he has some experience.

    I will have a detailed position by position analysis plus depth chart and predictions for next season right before the Spring Game, and then another one right before the season starts. If I am bored like you str8jacket, and can't fall asleep my pre-spring game analysis might just come earlier.

    Yep it's official, cubuffs.com has him as a safety, but my friend talked to him on facebook and he said he was. He also said he was excited about the move, and so am I. Polk and Mankhe at safety is going to be scary for any WR going over the middle.

    Brown (our secondary coach) was quoted saying Polk has NFL ability for a safety.

    I like this move.

    It is the best way to use our talent.

    Does anybody know if Polk played S on the defensive side of the ball in HS?
