Reason Elway didn't want the Colts to draft him.

Not sure how many that read this post will remamber this episode of Sportscentury I'm talking about but here goes. I got out a recording of John Elway from a Sportscentury episode and I thought it was kind of wierd when I watched it again that one of the reasons why John said he didn't want to go to the Colts was that the Colts coach at the time was an old school do it my way or the highway coach. Elway didn't want to even try to play under that kind of coach. Not because he felt he should be treated like a star, but that he wasn't accustomed to playing for that type of coach. He of course got his way and got himself sent to Denver. The rest is history. It just seems odd that the Jay Cutler vs Josh McDaniels saga has a slight resemblance to what Elway didn't want to go through. A coach that doesn't want to be gentle or baby his quarterback and not allow him to think he deserved any better treatment than any other player. Now it appears Josh and Jay are going through that kind of issue. Jay doesn't trust or like McDaniels and McDaniels thinks Jay should accept his way of coaching. I could be wrong in thinking that these two situations share a strange similarity. Don't get me wrong I want Jay to stay a Bronco and not leave because of this.

That coach you are talking about was Frank Kush of the Baltimore Colts, and yes, he was a tyrant. Elway's father warned John about him, and advised him not to go there.

There is really no parrallell to the two, because Jay is ALLREADY HERE, and McDaniels is the one that absolutly started this mess, along with the owner Bowlen, so, they are probably going to reap what they have sown.

If anything, John's case reminds me more of the Manning saga, not wanting to go to the Chargers.
    oh YEAH?

    Kush

I remember that story. Kush is the reason that Elway didn't go to Arizona St. thirty years ago as well. Ironically, though, Frank got fired in November of 1979 for abusing a player. Kush was the Bobby Knight of College Football, except that he didn't have a sense of humor that Knight has shown. ESPN Classic was going to do a "Top 5 Reasons you can't blame" episode on the "Elway not going to the Colts" thing two years ago, but, they decided not to make it when ESPN cancelled original programming. That stunk. I was looking forward to seeing that episode. I bet that Kush would have been reason #1.

You are correct, and his Father influenced him on that decision also, considering that he was a Pac-10 coach. I do not blame Elway 1 bit for not wanting to play for that man.

Elway going to the Redskins was part of Dan Reeves' plan to get Elway off the team to prove he was in charge and replace John with Tommy Maddox (Future MVP of Vince McMahon's XFL). That attempted trade cost Reeves his job.

Yep it's what ultimately got Reeves fired.

If my memory is right ,the Yankees were also after him.I know what he could do with a football and can imagine what he could do with a baseball. But i'm glad he came to the Broncos.

...also remember Elway told Baltimore that he wasn't going to play for them and all this took place BEFORE ELWAY WAS DRAFTED! Baltimore drafted him anyway and the only option left for Elway was to play baseball since he would not be allowed to play NFL football under the draft rules. Baltimore then traded Elway to Denver for Chris Hinton, Mark Hermann and a first-round draft pick.

Naturally Baltimore fans hated Elway and the following link tells what happened when Elway made his first appearance in Baltimore on a Monday Night Football game that happened to be Halloween night .... it wasn't good folks, it wasn't good!

Jack Elway pretty much hated Frank Kush. I think this goes back even farther than the Pac 10.

Exactly. I believe Jack Elway and Kush had some serious outings years before John was in college. Jack felt that Kush had screwed him over in a pretty big way. I'm sure that since then, John heard nothing but bad things about Kush. He knew this was the guy that screwed over his dad. He didn't go to school with Kush because Kush was there.

Same thing followed him into the pro's. It was karma. He screwed over Jack... and in the end.... John made the most monumental moves in NFL history. Saying he would play for the Yankees (who drafted him) instead of play in the NFL unless the Colts traded him.

I heard that story once as well. Apparently, Earnest Byner saw John in a casino and said to him "We almost got you today". John said "what", and Byner said that "We almost traded for you today". I wonder what the details of that trade were relating to who we would have gotten from Washington. I never have found that out. If it was nothing short of Herschel Walker compensation, it wouldn't have been fair.
