peanut is taking the time to manually update that because I want to say spam or bots were using the member list to do things

sorry makes no sense to me.

one would think it would be alphabetical and one could look someone up that way.

The list is done by contributor points (CP ranking). People wanted to see their progress. This was the only way we could do it.

Birdman is correct. They disabled the Members List in the top bar because spam bots were trolling it and it really slowed the MB down. If you want to look up a member, put their username into the search thing and their profile should come up.
