    Defense Wins Championships

The phrase, 'Defense wins championships', has become a sacred utterance from which Seahawks' fans seem to derive psychological and spiritual power.

But Super Bowl XLVIII is not the #1 offense vs #1 defense.

This is the #1 offense of all time vs the #1 defense of 2013

The funny thing is that Seatle doesn't have the number one Defense in the last 5 games.... BRONCOS DO!!

Teams win Championships... Whoever has the best all around team will win.

Offense can put up a lot of points defense can't get stops.

Defense can dominate and keep you in the game offense can't capitalize or turns the ball over.

Lose field position with the special teams.

All of those factors are based off of executing the game plan and who makes the least amount of mistakes.

There's been no 1 side of the ball in Super Bowl history to win it all.

2000 Ravens their offense and special teams helped against the Giants.

1985 Bears offense stepped up big that game against the Pats and helped that dominate defense.

I remember the majority of your negative posts stating that the broncos would have to win a shootout because the defense wasn't going to be able to stop the mighty chargers offense and then clutch Brady.

Now they're not so great after the D made them look like a JV offense?

Another point is that great offenses can wear down a defense and it can (with a lead) be a clock chewing tool!

A solid team game across all 3 phases wins championships. Either team that comes out hold the trophy will have to play a nearly perfect game. There is no "smoking gun" that is the key other than that. Our teams are so evenly matched that it will come down to one or two mistakes on either side. Their offense will have to compliment their defense as our defense will need to compliment our offense. And Special Teams cannot give up big plays. So it's more than just "defense", a lot more.

Everyone that says defense wins championships is why Seattle will win is completely ignorant to the fact that their is a D in Denver too.

Our D can also fit the bill of defense wins championships.

I could easily see Seattle holding us to 20 and everyone praising them but us still winning the SB 20-7.

Pretty sure that would mean our defense won a championship.

Since I like how our D matches up against their O, I am okay with the phrase.

Blah.. the Ravens didn't have a great defense last year. The Giants had a good pass rush but their defense overall wasn't great. The Packers were almost historically bad in terms of giving up yards but they had a good pass rusher and they got timely turnovers. Same for the Saints. The only that matters is can you get off the field on 3rd down and can you hold the other team to FGs instead of TDs. We can do both and I don't think any team can get off the field consistently against our offense. We just have to score TDs when we get the chance.

Maybe we all use the word great too easily. Good Ds dominate regular seasons and dont become great Ds until they win a championship. If they lose, Hawks D won't be regarded any higher than the 49ers last year. If they win, then people start comparing them in history to Ravens Steelers and Bears.
