Paul Stastny (John Leyba, The Denver Post)

In Sunday’s paper and online we listed five major things the Avalanche would like to address in the off-season and short blurbs about the current players, plus a column on Paul Stastny. What we didn’t have was a list of potential unrestricted free agents the Avs might be eyeing, particularly at D. So here’s a handful, and you can look at the complete list at CapGeek.com, already filtered here.

CapGeek.com makes a hockey writer’s job easy when it comes to this stuff, and on paper (your screen), Pittsburgh’s Matt Niskanen is your top pending UFA defenseman based on production (46 points and plus-33 this season), age (27), durability (played in 81-of-82 regular-season games) and big-game experience (49 games in Stanley Cup playoffs). The former Minnesota-Duluth Bulldog from Virginia, Minn., is currently second among NHL playoff defensemen in scoring with eight points (two goals), a point behind Montreal’s P.K. Subban. Niskanen is fourth among Pittsburgh D in playoff ice time (20:17), behind Paul Martin, Brooks Orpik and Kris Letang.

Orpik, 33, is also a pending UFA, but Martin and Letang are under contract next season for a combined $13.25 million. No doubt the Pens will try to re-sign Niskanen, but can they afford three D at $5 million plus? Niskanen, currently making $2.3 million, is going to going to get his first massive contract, and it seems likely it will come after he tests the market July 1.

Other pending UFA D the Avs might pursue: Andrej Mesaros, Boston; Raphael Diaz, NYR; Nikita Nikitin, Columbus; Paul Ranger, Toronto; Kyle Quincey, Detroit; Anton Stralman, NYR; Matt Green, Los Angeles. But that’s just a sampling, age 30-under names that strike me, but many other are going to be available, particularly more recognizable names in their 30s such as San Jose’s Dan Boyle, Montreal’s Andrei Markov and Sami Salo of Tampa Bay.

Quincey, the 28-year-old former Av, maintains a home in Denver where he spends the off-season and would undoubtedly consider coming back to Colorado. I mentioned Green because the former North Dakota Fighting Sioux is a 30-year-old warrior who would be an excellent addition to any team. Guys hate to play against him.

As long as they add somebody more aggressive!! Avs need an enforcer to protect the speed they have up front and prevent teams from thinking they can target the speed guys and purposefully injure them.

I know there is a large contingent that hate EJ, I'm from STL so I saw it here too, but I believe Roy has helped him a lot.

Interestingly I'm hearing talk here about Ells not returning to the Blues. I believe this was Jiggy's final year in the NHL. Maybe bring Ells back, he showed moments of excellence in STL.

EJ got better this year but I still think he's making too much. If we had a good defense he'd be in the 3rd or 4th pairing.

I would like for Elliot to come back. Maybe we could get someone foolish enough to trade for Attokaillio and or Berra and give us a decent player or draft pick.

His contract is too huge for it to be worth it, imo.

The more I look at the deal the more I like it. Briere is a guy who's still a good leader and would provide a good veteran presence like Tanguay, and we need more experience. I liked PA a lot but he was too inconsistent and hurt too often. Briere played well int he playoffs last year, and I think his experience will help us in the playoffs next year. He can still provide a spark. His contract is for the same amount as PAs essentially but it's up next year, so maybe the FO is also using the space created to backload a contract for Stastny or O'Reilly. I dont really care about the 5th round pick. At that point in the draft it's a crapshoot and it's up to your system to develop those players.

Well, Stastny just signed a 4 year deal with the Blues. We need to keep O'Reilly now. I'll miss him but won't forget the 3 or 4 seasons he basically took off. We really need a faceoff specialist now.

Now we traded a 2nd and 7 for Brad Stuart. Good trade also imo. Any dmen we added would probably make our blueline better. He brings size and toughness and he blocks a lot of shots. This team is going to be great to watch next year. The ROR situation needs to get worked out.
