    Broncos sign punter Karl Schmitz

I hope he can give overpaid Britton Colquitt some serious competition!

The Broncos signed punter Karl Schmitz on Thursday, it was announced. If you thought signing an undrafted tight end out of the GNAC was an obscure move by the Broncos, wait until you get a load of this guy.

Schmitz is a former member of the Jacksonville University Dolphins, who play in the Pioneer Football League. He played for them in 2008 (!), and made such an impression that they don't even have his name spelled correctly in their archives.

The official site says Schmitz handled both punts and kickoffs for Jacksonville that season (2008!), but the Dolphins' stats don't credit him with any punts. Rather, it shows just 11 kickoffs, for a meager 54.7-yard average. Of course, that was seven years ago, and presumably, he's since added some leg strength.

The Bermuda native has worked with former Jaguars and Bills placekicker Mike Hollis. If you're into kicking porn, here are some videos of him working out, plus some scouting tidbits and workout stats.

It sounds like his only purpose is to keep Colquitt's leg fresh.

      LOL.

If Colquitt's job is supposed to be in jeopardy this sends the wrong message, in my opinion. To me, this would be the same as busing in the kicker from the highschool nearby in Aurora, though that option might actually accomplish the same thing and be cheaper.

I do find it funny that he played for the "Jacksonville Dolphins". They had all fanbase's covered, lol!

The dude was kicking 70 yards FG in the videos. He could replace three players on our roster since he can punt as well as kick. He could replace both kickers and the punter.

The link reports his kickoff average was 54 yards. I hope there is an NFL rule change that would allow him to kick it twice so we can get some touchbacks.

            Here's an idea:

Well if the local kicker can do a better job cheaper, hey I'm all for it:thumb:

Personally, if he can perform with teams actually on the field, I would keep McManus and him. Each can do every job and back each other up. Both will come relatively cheap so it will open up a roster spot and free up money along with giving us instant backups at each position.

All members of KO & P teams must tackle.

I actually like the idea of a kick returner being afraid of a kicker.

Obviously Sam, but you hope that returns don't make it back far enough to need the kicker to tackle
