    Billy Thompson and Dennis Smith.

I can't believe John Lynch is even on the list.

Sad he is the newest of the safeties there! We need a playmaker or two at that position..
agreed. That's a long time to go without a real playmaker at those positions

I gotta say some things for Lynch here. He didn't have great numbers, and was a guy you had to hide a little in coverage. When it came to run support, I can't think of a safety I'd rather have. You gotta realize the main reason he was able, as basically an outside linebacker, to play safety as long and as well as he did was because of how reliable he was. Very rarely was he out of position where his assignments were concerned, and that's a major part of why he had so many incredible highlight reel hits. He wasn't a freak athlete like Ed Reed who could just freelance in the defensive backfield, but he was Johnny on the spot and great with angles. It would be hard to employ him in today's NFL, but there weren't many safeties I'd rather have back when he played.

I know, we all want to say Atwater and move on. Here is the wrinkle, I’ll put the names out, but you must consider their whole,career.. not just in Denver. Just to make it interesting,

    Steve Atwater
    John Lynch
    Austin “Goose” Gonsoulin
    Brian Dawkins
    Bill Thompson
    Dennis Smith

That’s the best safeties I can think of. Who do you think is the best of that bunch?
Been watching the Broncos for 45+ years.

Have seen all those guys play except Goose.

Atwater and Smith stand out above the others. WIth a nod to Billy Thompson.

    Atwater.

His game was what made football for me, I can't say that about any other football player. One of the greatest Bronco's in history.

A little OT...it's hard to believe that at one point USC had Steve Atwater, Ronnie Lott, and Joey Browner all on the same team.

Atwater played at Arkansas, didn't he? Do you mean Dennis Smith instead?

That was a great Secondary USC had. Smith, Lott and Browner played against John Elway in what was the Pac 10 at the time, I believe. Ronnie Lott tells the story of covering a Stanford receiver in the EZ while the LOS was at midfield telling his guy that John couldn't throw it that far, when the ball suddenly appeared in the EZ.
