Broncos will pick up contract options for Emmanuel Sanders and Derek Wolfe

INDIANAPOLIS — John Elway made it official.

The Broncos will exercise their team options on wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders and defensive end Derek Wolfe, the team’s president of football operations/general manager announced Wednesday at the NFL Scouting Combine.

“They're good football players,” Elway said. “That's why we plan on exercising, and it’s different situations but we're planning on exercising both of those."

With their injury history and looking at this objectively, it would probably be best to move on from them. HOWEVER, being a big Bronco fan and showing loyalty to players that have worked their butt's off and are both great leaders and key players for the Broncos the past 5 years...I like the move. I really want to see how Sanders is going to look after a torn achilles.

Wolfe in particular has made several comments publicly which a quite critical of the team and the teams decisions. While I don't disagree with some of what he has said airing that out in public is not a great look. I hope the teams commitment to him (for now) will help elevate those types of comments this season.

I would have been fine if they let both go, but it certainly makes sense to bring Sanders back.

I guess Fangio likes what he has seen from Wolfe.

I certainly hope veteran leadership isn’t the reason for keeping them around.

In order for a football team to be successful, leaders among the players are necessary whether it's high school and college upper classmen or veteran pros. Coaches can only do so much and they aren't on the field. Good leaders enforce accountability and put top down peer pressure on everybody to look alive, pay attention and leave it all on the field. Strong, positive leadership is intangible, and can result in the team buying into the program and stepping up their game. Sounds like Elway wants to retain proven leaders and not reinvent the wheel in that area.

Wolfe signed his team friendly deal while Jackson bolted, would have been a bad move to let him go, he already gave us a fair deal. If you compare Wolfe and Jacksons productivity, we got a good deal. Saved us some money, and also covered off his missed games with the lower pay cheques. Same goes for Sanders really, he was more important than DT the last couple years for far less money. Happy to see both back.

Wolfe lost me a while back with his Drug suspension. But, bringing back Sanders, the best WR on this team, only makes sense. Let's just hope his Achilles is 100%.
