    1992 Chargers vs. 2019 Broncos

    1992 Chargers…

Jake Plummer suggested that the Broncos look up the 92 Chargers who started 0-4 then finished 11-5, won the division and made the playoffs.

I wanted to look and see if there are any similarities. There are..

    Coach:
    • The Chargers had a new Coach in Bobby Ross, who was 56. This was his first head coaching job in the NFL, but he did have experience as a HC at the college level.
    • While the team was losing he focused on fundamentals while keeping a positive attitude.
    • He took over a team that went 4-12 and the 6-10 the two seasons prior to that.

    QB:
    • Starting QB John Friesz was injured in the preseason
    • Humphries (backup to Mark Rypien) was acquired in a trade and was learning the offense on the fly.

    Offense:
    • They had a running back tandem of Marion Butts (809yds) and Rod Bernstine (499yds)
    • Ronnie Harmon (rb) had 235yds rushing but was a beast in the passing game with 102 targets and 960 yds.
    • Anthony Miller was their most productive WR with (1060yds)
    • Their offensive line play was solid.
    • Offense averaged 7.25 points in the first 4 games.

    Defense:
    • The defense was led by Junio Seau and Leslie O’Neal

    Schedule
    • Their first 4 games were actually against playoff teams with the exception of one (Broncos).
    • Chiefs 10-6 (wildcard team losing to the Chargers)
    • Broncos 8-8 – 3rd in the division
    • Steelers 11-5 (division winner)
    • Oilers 10-6 (wildcard)

In contrast, here is what Denver looks like in the first 4 games:

    Coach:
    • First year coach with Vic Fangio, 61. First head coaching job on any level, but a ton of experience at the college and NFL level.
    • His focus is on fundamentals
    • He took over a team that was 6-10 the previous season and 5-11 and 9-7 the two prior.

    QB:
    • Flacco was acquired in a trade during the offseason.
    • Backup rookie QB injured hand in preseason

    Offense:
    • Two headed running game with Lindsay and Freeman
    • Lindsay is becoming more of a target in the passing game
    • Sutton is a rising star, while Sanders is the speedy veteran.
    • Offensive line play has been suspect, but is slowly improving.
    • Offense is averaging 17.5 points in the first 4.

    Defense:
    • Known as a defensive team, but failing to stop run
    • Led by Von Miller and Chris Harris
    • Giving up 23.25 points per game in first 4 games.

    Schedule:
    • Raiders (2-2, most likely .500 team)
    • Bears (3-1, playoff team last year)
    • Packers (3-1, looking like playoff team)
    • Jaguars ( 2-2, wildcard team?)

I thought it was an interesting contrast. A few breaks here and a few stops there and this team could be 2-2 or 3-1. I am not saying they will run the tables and go 11-5, but there is an ever so slight glimmer of hope.

don't have to go that far

the 2017 chargers with a new coach started the season 0-4

    improved to 3-6

    and finally finished 9-7

they however had a solid Philip rivers and wisenhunt was a returning OC

Don’t hold your breath, maybe if the schedule was easy like when we won 11 straight in 2012. But with the remaining schedule, I’m pretty sure every team we play is currently .500 or above, they all (expect maybe the Raiders) will likely be in the playoff conversation by the end of year. It’s one of the all-time brutal schedules.

I agree that we could improve throughout the season, but not anywhere close to 11 wins.

It happened once in NFL history. No way this team only loses once more this season.

The refs NEVER help Denver! (maybe with one exception being Ed Hochuli) (sp)

The next 4 games could really put the division up for grabs. The Chiefs showed last night they are beatable, especially if you run it down their throat.

    Broncos next 4:
    vs. Titans
    vs. Chiefs
    @ Colts
    vs. Browns

    Chiefs next 4
    vs. Texans
    @ Broncos
    vs. Packers
    vs. Vikings

    Chargers next 4:
    vs. Steelers
    @ Titans
    @ Bears
    vs. Packers

    Raiders next 4:
    @ Packers
    @ Texans
    vs. Lions
    vs. Chargers

Dang, things could start to get ugly quick for the Chiefs
