Certainly there was a concern that James might be risky due to injury history but there was also a lot of praise for the signing too... back when he was signed. Here are some quotes from articles about the signing:

He's become an effective right tackle where he's generally played since finding time on both ends of the line as a rookie.
He has been a reliable part of the Dolphins offense since Miami selected him with the No. 19 pick of the 2014 draft. He started all 16 games during his rookie season and, when healthy, remained a lineup fixture for the next five years.
Even before news of the signing broke, Nicki Jhabvala of the Athletic pegged this as a good fit: "You know who would make a ton of sense for the Broncos? Ja'Wuan James."
Cameron Wolfe ... Dolphins wanted to keep Ja’Wuan James, but they didn’t want to go as high as Denver did. Broncos tried to trade for him last offseason and made him one of their top FA targets this offseason. They got their man.
Also reported when signed ... his injury history should be a concern after he missed 18 games over the past four years.

From SBNation Scotty Payne ... "another nicely structured deal for the Broncos"

Only has a $8 million dollar cap hit in 2019, and a $13 million dollar cap hit in 2020
$27M guaranteed at signing (signing bonus + 2019 salary + 2020 salary) via Spotrac
$5M of 2021 salary fully guarantees on the 5th league day of 2021 (injury guaranteed now) via Spotrac
2022 is an option year to be exercised by the 1st league day of 2022 via Spotrac
"I think this deal finally solves the Broncos right tackle issue they long had and James’s best football is still ahead of him."

Reality is the Broncos are stuck with him through next season, they can cut him after that with a 6M dead money cap hit in 2021. Hopefully he will get healthy and come through for them next season. In the meantime, I think the Broncos should stay away from FA OT's and pick 2, maybe 3 in the upcoming draft to compete with him at RT. Easy to say, in hindsight that this was a bad FA pick up.

Maybe there's some emotional issues or similar things at play? If I were the Broncos I would try to get him into some counseling.
True enough....I really didn't know the cap situation, so it was a lame comment on my part. But he really does not seem to want to play.

After what the Broncos have gone through with FA O-Linemen in the past few years, I'm of the opinion they are too expensive and often don't work out (e.g., Stephenson, Watson, Okung, Kouandijo, Leary). Ryan Harris, Billy Turner and Jared Veldheer were good. Harris retired after SB 50 and Veldheer retired after signing with NE this year. Turner wasn't that expensive, but Denver let him go to GB.

Denver has a great O-Line coach who has done well with drafted and undrafted rookies just as Scangarello has. IMO the Broncos should revamp the O-Line through the Draft. They will probably draft more than one next Spring. They have some depth guys (Wilkinson, Schlottmann, Morris, Anderson, Levin, Rodgers) who could step up, but they need some starters.

James could become a player next year, but more Tackles will be needed in the event he doesn't. If he's still with the team, Bolles may be inside. O-Line needs at least one starter, two if James can't go.

Elway has been horrible at building an OLine.

This is strange because he played well against Houston and after the game James and Fangio said there were no setbacks and it seemed like he was going to play more this week. I wonder if he tweaked it in practice again or if there’s some personal drama going on between him and someone on the coaching staff.

Yes, they need to just forget about FA as far as OL goes, they are overpriced and if not risky to begin with they become that after getting their payday? Draft and develop, hopefully with Munchak. Veldheer was a mistake by NE, not as costly. Never know but maybe one of the others already on the roster can step up? Schlottman at OG will get a good look this week with Leary out.
Draft some talent for the OL.!

James didn’t practice the entire week per Mile High Huddle.

Right tackle issues started when we decided to take Watson over Schwartz

I would say the issues started when the Broncos put Michael Schofield at RT.

When Ty Sambrailo went on IR, Ryan Harris moved to the left.

Does anyone know if there is literally anything we can do to cut him without a cap hit? You'd think that if a healthy player just decided to quit playing that the team would have some protections to the deal. I mean, couldn't players just sign a huge deal then sit and do nothing?

The James situation is a pain because there seems no clear way to plan for the O-Line due to his unreliability. The only comfort for me is knowing Munchak will sort it out with help from the FO.

There has to be a way to void this contract, no? James is a disgrace and a fraud. I hated the signing then, and hate it even more now.

Signing Stephenson, signing Watson, drafting Bolles over Ramczyk, signing James - just an all around bad effort by Elway.
