Von Miller: Losing the way we lose “defeats my soul”

“It’s hard,” Miller said, via Lorenzo Reyes of USA Today. “I don’t really even know what to say. I don’t know how we got to this point. I don’t know why we [are losing] like this. I really don’t know what to say. It’s tough. It’s tough being where we at. And it’s tough. I’m 30 years old and going out there with whatever issues I’m dealing with and still coming up so short. It’s tough playing nine years with Chris Harris and dealing with these last couple of ones, especially with the type of standard that we had when I came into the league. We went to the playoffs five years straight.

“I know I’m getting ahead of myself and I’m talking about more than just a game, but this is tough. I’m really lost for words.”

Was it just postgame frustration or will Miller seek to leave Denver after this season?

The Broncos are only 25-36 since winning the Super Bowl to end the 2015 season. They are on their third coach and seventh starting quarterback since Peyton Manning retired.

“I’m here,” Miller said when asked about his future. “I don’t really have any answers. I’ve tried. We have tried everything, from team bonding, to coming in early, working hard at practice, film, I really don’t know. I mean, the emotions are still high right after the game, but I’m just lost right now.”

Talent. When you lack talent across the board, trying hard will only go so far. And as much as I love Von Miller, his impact on the game just isn't where it once was. The excuses rained down for him as he has slowly declined, but the facts are what they are, and Von just isn't the impact player he once was.

I'm not sure he's full-time player anymore. I think it might be time to transition him to a pass rush specialist. That's will keep him fresher, put him on the field when it's most important, and hopefully increase his impact on the game.

He is such a good run defender though, and with his increase in mass over recent years that might not be surprising. But he has just lost that quick twitch ability which seen him cause havoc as a pass rusher for years. Maybe cutting some weight and transitioning to a part-time role would help. But I am just not sure, because he sees plenty of one on one match ups, he just can't beat them like he once did. So I don't know, do you make that transition when his best trait now is probably his run defense ? And when you account for the money he makes, can you justify making him a part-time player ?

Von hasn’t been as quick since his ACL injury. I think I’ve only seen him duck under an OT once since then. Combine that with the weight gain and a streaky motor and you get what you’ve got the past few seasons. A random great game spread out over a bunch of meh. I definitely don’t think he’s played with full effort very much this season. Last season he dominated against Seattle and had a handful of other good games but I don’t think he’s been fully invested this season.

Miller is still a great player - but missing Chubb is hurting his game. Chubb (like Ware), is an imposing threat that the OL needs to account for. And his lack of presence has had a huge effect on the pass rush and Von Miller's play this season....

By my eye test Von has bulked up. So I think as a fan you need to add that into your mental math in how we evaluate him. I think as fans we have been so used to Von being a "one trick pony" AKA he was just so fast on his 1st step that he just won. IMO - Von may need to drop some weight BUT I do think that he has intentionally tried to expand his game so that he could ensure he extends his career once his speed goes into decline. As a fan I like what Von is doing BUT I do think that Fangio SHOULD be looking to alter the way Von is used and in turn have his drop a little weight.

I read this quote differently. IMO - I read/heard this similar to the NBA. I see players like Von & CHJ looking at themselves as being above the league and the team. AS a result I think that we have seen both of them "load managing" and that is why we are seeing streaky play.

Von got paid because of his pass rushing abilities.

If weight gain has reduced his ability to do that, he needs to lose the weight and be a part time player.

His value to the team is as a pass rusher. As long as he’s producing as such, he’s as worth the money as he was at the time he signed the contract.

I don’t know that it can be pinned on Chubb being out. There were games where neither of them were a big factor, if at all.

It is tough. It's tough as a fan. I can only imagine how frustrating it is as a player. Say what you will about Von's play (and I agree he's not young unblockable Von anymore), but his position depends heavily on team DL play. In particular, the more penetration in the middle, the more opportunity for Von and Chubb. It's something we've been missing for years. I think if we added talent in the middle, we'd see a rejuvenated Von. Much like Ware when he arrived. Sort of full-circle. But we need that disruptive middle.

totally disagree. We have the best front 3 in Wolfe, harris, and Purcell that we have had in years.

Miller is still one of the best OLB’s in football.

maybe, but I would have a hard time putting him in the top 5, maybe even top 10

TJ Watt, Chandler Jones, Mack, Barrett, both Smiths in GB, Dupree, Collins, Darius Leonard and Landry are all playing better right now.
