    --- Patriot Act Renewal !!! ---

--- After all the moaning and groaning by critics of the Patriot Act, worried that it would "infringe on our freedoms", Congress passed the renewal, and the President signed it today just as 16 articles were about to expire ---

--- "The Patriot Act has accomplished exactly what it was designed to do," Bush said during a signing ceremony in the White House East Room. "It has helped us detect terrorist cells, disrupt terrorist plots, and save American lives."

It's against unreasonable search and seizure.

It was the correct thing to do.

For the uneducated that want to somehow turn this into something to bash the President with....

The Senate vote was 89-10 in favor. Many Dems voted in favor of it in order for there to be 89 yes votes.
We are in desperate times, and desperate times call for desperate measures.

In addition, those of you who want to rant about "warrentless searches," here's an exerpt from a Washington Times article...

Previous administrations, as well as the court that oversees national security cases, agreed with President Bush's position that a president legally may authorize searches without warrants in pursuit of foreign intelligence.

"The Department of Justice believes -- and the case law supports -- that the president has inherent authority to conduct warrantless physical searches for foreign intelligence purposes and that the president may, as he has done, delegate this authority to the attorney general," Clinton Deputy Attorney General Jamie S. Gorelick said in 1994 testimony before the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence.

That same authority, she added, pertains to electronic surveillance such as wiretaps.

Here's something interesting that you NEVER hear from the press today....

In 1994, President Clinton expanded the use of warrantless searches to entirely domestic situations with no foreign intelligence value whatsoever. In a radio address promoting a crime-fighting bill, Mr. Clinton discussed a new policy to conduct warrantless searches in highly violent public housing projects.

If you want to claim President Bush is violating the law by conducting these searches in the name of national security, where's your outrage about Billy Boy doing the same thing to "fight crime?"

The Patriot Act is the right thing to do considering our circumstances.

How hilarious. Every single time a Right Winger gets attacked for something they pull out the Bill Clinton thing. Why? Why do you do that? Say for instance on how Bush lied to the World about the Weapons of Mass Destruction in Iraq. The common response is: Well Clinton lied to because one of his aides was underneath his desk the whole time. To heck with that! You hate Clinton because he wanted something new he got tired of old Hillary. (Believe me, I wouldn't even be interested in her; I'm sure you wouldn't either)

    Way to address the FACTS.

Not one line in my post says anything, other than a quote from his Asst. AG. I make no accusations about lying, about sex, about anything else.

I present a FACT about his use of warrantless searches, and your only comeback is how "I hate Clinton."

    Pretty weak.

Oh, and your interest in the First Lady during his Presidency is more information than we needed to know.

    CAN WE PLEASE RELOAD?

Let's not have a Clinton vs. Bush debate again. Can you post on any of the other 300 political discussions posts?

I'd like to hear from the poster's about the PATRIOT ACT, despite who introduced it. (Bush is an idiot, Clinton is slime....etc.,etc.)

The ACT seems to be the first shot fired against the Constitution. The Freedoms the document assure seem to be negotiable.

Bush will be gone in 2 years and nobody will elect another Clinton, so libs vs. neo-cons argument will be irrelevant. This act will outlast any politician.

The real issue is do we deconstruct the founding tenent in Western Civilization based upon the attacks of those who do not live by it? I'd like to think we don't, but majority rules. The country is in a state of flux....will it be recognizable in 50 years?
