    Back to what matters: Baseball.

Marquis looked decent yesterday and I'm really, really excited to see how he performs for us during the regular season. Same goes for Matt Murton...that boy can hit!
Yeah, I honestly had no idea and then I signed on here and was like....holy crap. I think the boards are going to blow up or something. I'm just trying to figure out what everyone's problem is....hello its MARCH. Meaning it is baseball season. I don't even know what football IS this time of the year haha.

I'm still hoping Seth Smith gets the spot in left. And for some reason I am feeling less secure about Barmes' role on the team.

    Yay for March!!!!

I'm so happy it's baseball season. It's about 65 where I live, I've got the Rockies game on the radio, and it's baseball season!!!!!!!!!

I just hope we dont become the sole team in baseball history to go winless in Spring Training :shake:

(I'm going to wake up early on the 3rd and get MLB 2k9 too!)
Rest in Peace, Darrent and Damien. You will be forever in our thoughts

A sort of sobering article on our pitching situation from Woody.

Rox's Smith symbolic of numbers problem

TEMPE, Ariz. Greg Smith was hammered like a 10-penny nail at quitting time.

That two-inning, three-hit, three-walk, three-run laborious effort in his first spring training exhibition and first appearance for the Rockies on Friday was not quite what the club was wishing for from the starting pitcher acquired in the Matt Holliday deal.

"It was a controlling-your- emotions day," Smith said. It obviously was not a controlling- your-pitches day.

But then, the crafty left- hander all average left-handers are characterized as "crafty" is only projected to be one of the Rockies' many potential No. 5 starters. The Rockies lead the league in No. 5 starters.

Here's a partial list of No. 5 candidates: Smith, Jason Hirsh, Greg Reynolds, Franklin Morales, Jason Marquis, Glendon Rusch, Josh Fogg, Jorge De La Rosa and the usual assortment of minor-league camp followers.

When the Rockies' No. 5 faces the opponent's No. 5, they should be fine, thank you.

The problem, as you may have surmised, is that the Rockies need fewer fives and more ones, twos, treys and fours.

It looks like another of those start-by-troupe-or-troops seasons for the Rox.

One day the Rockies will go into spring training games with five cinch starters. That day possibly won't come in your lifetime, definitely not in mine.

The Rockies used 11 starters last season. That would be a good over/under number for 2009. I'll take the over.

    It's early, granted.

But scratch Jeff Francis already. The former No. 1 pitcher is out for the season. Perhaps he should have undergone surgery at the end of last season.

Which leaves Aaron Cook as the only sure thing, if having one outstanding season (16-9 and an All-Star Game appearance) guarantees certainty.

So the Rockies have Ubaldo Jimenez, possessor of a new contract, who was awful the first half of last season, awesome the second half. Let's suppose that he will be more awesome than awful.

    That's two.

Jason Marquis, picked up from the Cubs, is a veteran of 198 starts, 79 up, 70 down. He'll be the Rockies' No. 3 pitcher, by default. Truth is, he's a No. 5 starter, but the Rockies don't need any more No. 5 starters.

The fourth and fifth starters will be Question Mark and the Mysterians. The Rockies are hoping that one of the No. 5 starters becomes a No. 4, although they could be Nos. 1, 2 and 3 in Colorado Springs. Or No. 5 in the weekend softball league.

As we have seen, starting pitching with the Rockies is not a precise science. They've never had a 20-game winner but annually have five-game winners.

In real estate, before the housing bust, the slogan was "location, location, location."

In baseball, it's "rotation, rotation, rotation." And location is a plus.

No matter what Tulo and Spilly and Todd and Brad and the boys do offensively, and no matter which closer, Manuel Corpas or Huston Street, emerges, and no matter how many fundamentals Clint Hurdle teaches the team, the success of the rotation is really what matters.

If the Rockies start the five pitchers in camp who had the most major-league victories last year, the combined record would be 48-54. Other than Cook, nobody won more than 12, and Cook wasn't so impressive down the stretch.

Somebody some bodies, actually has to step up. Hirsh? When not hurt, he's won five games in two seasons with the Rox. Reynolds? The youngster was 2-8 in 13 starts last season, and his performances were worse than his record. Fogg? He was a dragon killer two years ago, a dragon breath last year with Cincinnati. Rusch? He was OK after joining the Rockies in 2008, but four victories is not a hook to hang your ballcap on.

In their first times out this spring, Hirsh and Jimenez did not thrill. And Smith, one of the three players obtained for Holliday, did not distinguish himself Friday.

"I've been better," said Smith, who won 7 and lost 16 with Oakland last season. "When you're with a new team, you try to make a good impression with your first start." He didn't.

This is the first week, and the Rockies hope Smith improves. Their best-start scenario is that Cook can win 18, that Jimenez becomes a true ace of the present with 15 victories, that Marquis and De La Rosa eat up a lot of innings and end up with 11 victories each.

And that Smith or Morales or Hirsh or Reynolds can come through like a trooper in the spring and is able to control his emotions, his pitches and the No. 5 spot in the rotation and finish the season with 10 victories.

That would be a 20-victory improvement over the Rockies' top five starters of 2007.

    Hammer or nail?

I think Ben Tate will be the best back taken in the 2010 draft. (5/3/10)

Another lopsided loss for the Rox today against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in California of the United Sates part of the World.

    Highlight: Murton's two run homer

Lowlight: Morales getting beaten like....like...I'll let you guys fill in the blanks.
