    First Depth Chart Released

This came across my feed. Interesting to look at. This seems a bit early but they do have a game coming up, so they had to have one. Hogan is listed as the #2QB so we should get to see him play a bit against the Falcons. Nothing world shattering going on:

    Here we go:

Kevin Hogan to start Pro Football Hall of Fame game, Drew Lock and Brett Rypien to follow at QB https://www.denverbroncos.com/news/k...brett-rypien-t

I was wondering about that. Makes sense.

Keep this in mind when watching the HOF game:

“The main thing that we want to accomplish is get the individual and the team ready for the regular season,” Fangio said. “One of our biggest jobs is to make sure we pick the right 53 guys, so we want to see guys go out and play. There will be times where, as coaches, we may have a good feel for what the other team is going to run, but we’re going to call something that’s hard for us, just to see if guys can handle it. Hard assignment — not hard mentally. Can guys cover receivers? Can guys rush the passer? Can we stop the run? It’s an evaluation tool, mainly. But like anything, once you start playing, that competitiveness gets in you and you want to win the game. But evaluation and getting the team ready is job No. 1.”

For me this was an interesting one.

    1. If a rookie like Lock is legitimately challenging Hogan's job then we should try to move off of him.

    2. Jamal Carter when he last played looked like he was pretty good. I'm shocked to see him so low. I wonder If his injuries have caught up with him...

    3. Who will be the Shaq Barrett and Shane Ray for us this season?

    4. We have another guy who is fast like Lindsay....why is he not getting looks as a return guy?

I had a few other comments but I'll start with these.

Yesterday's depth chart means nothing. Fangio said as much during his presser after practice, said they only did it because the NFL insists and that he didn't think anyone should even look at it.

Tom McMahon has also said that if they force Atlanta to punt 9 times they're likely to use 9 different players back to return those punts.

The depth chart will change drastically as the preseason goes on.

Then he should have trolled them and listed McManus at starting QB, Miller at punter, CHJ at long snapper, etc...

    That would have been great.

The star of TC is Vic Fangio.

An ode to Colorado's Michigan Game depth chart would give us something fun to talk about. Problem is the NFL would probably fine him into oblivion for it. You can fudge injuries with impunity (Brady's shoulder for years, Gurley last year, Sherman's last year with the Seahawks), but God forbid you list Uncle Rico as your backup quarterback before a preseason game.

It's not indicative of what the real positioning will be, but it's not meaningless. It's just a snapshot of how players are organized leading into a preseason game. It can show vague patterns of the staff's thoughts and it's enjoyable for people (like me) who have barely seen anything of what the players have been doing at Training Camp. It's also an organized way for fans to keep track of the roster through the preseason.

It's meaningless from the aspect that the Head Coach said it was meaningless yesterday. It's also meaningless from the point that many of the players buried way down on the depth chart have gotten reps with the 1's at times. It's interesting to see who the starters are listed as currently (no surprises) but really for groups 2,3 and depth there pretty much all the same right now. When they get their reps in the preseason that will be their chance to say where they stand on the depth chart.

I agree it's a great organized way to keep track of the team during the preseason, but it's not a great metric to see where players actually stand right now.

We probably should familiarize ourselves with them since they'll get a massive number of reps on Thursday.
