Shanahan Says Broncos Got A Lot Done At Camp

(CBS4) DENVER The Broncos finished this year's practices in front of fans on Saturday and announced a training camp attendance record.

Team officials said 33,071 fans attended the 2007 Training Camp practices, which is the highest total since the Broncos started their training camp practices in Englewood at the Paul D. Bowlen Memorial Broncos Centre at Dove Valley. The team moved Training Camp from Greeley to Dove Valley in 2003.

"We have gotten a lot done in this camp," coach Mike Shanahan said. "We have a lot left, even through our camp ends officially on Saturday, we still have two practices against Dallas on Wednesday and Thursday that will obviously be a big part of our evaluation process. We still have four games to see what these guys can do, not only on offense and defense, but special teams as well. We have a long way to go."

The Broncos will have a walk-through practice closed to the public on Sunday before flying to San Francisco where they'll face the 49ers in their exhibition opener Monday night.

After that, it's off to Dallas for two days of joint practices with the Cowboys before a game at Texas Stadium.

The Broncos wrap up their exhibition slate with home games against Cleveland on Aug. 25 and Arizona on Aug. 30.

Ten players were out of pads Saturday morning at Dove Valley, including guard Ben Hamilton who has a concussion and tackle Matt Lepsis who has a strained groin.

More Comments From Mike Shanahan on Saturday

On DE Jarvis Moss' status for Monday's game

"Right now, he's scheduled to play. He practiced today and looked pretty good. Unless there's a setback, he should be ready to go."

On how long the starters will play on Monday

"We've been pretty consistent with this since I've been here. I'll go 10-12 reps with our starters in the first game. The second game they go 20-25. The third game they usually go 35 plays, middle of the third quarter. Then the fourth game the established starters don't play. Guys fighting for a position, we'll get a chance to evaluate them in the fourth game as well."

On the team being where he thought at the end of training camp

"I think' we've had a good offseason, good OTA's. Even though the offseason program is finished here, we still got a week next week against the Cowboys, a couple good days of practice. We can evaluate these players in game situations, which we haven't been able to do. That's part of the training camp is to evaluate these guys during game situations. That's why we have the offseason program, that's why you have the OTA's, that's why you have the training camp to see how people perform when the pressure is on. Playing against different teams and if they can keep their composure and do the things that you're hoping they can do. "

On Assistant Head Coach/Defense Jim Bates' new defensive scheme

"It's going to take some time. Obviously Jim Bates and the defensive coaches have done a great job. It takes a while to learn a new system, and there will be some growing pains through preseason. That's a part of the evaluation process, that's a part of our game plan going in ... not to come up with a game plan but to just get used to the basic fundamentals. It's not going to look perfect right away but hopefully by the time we get started with out first preseason game, it'll come together."

On Jim Bates and his scheme

"You know the schemes that the person's bringing in before hand or else you wouldn't have hired him. We've been watching the guy for 20 years at both the pro level and the collegiate level. We know exactly what he's doing and what he's done, so you don't have to have a lot of conversation there because he's been running his scheme for a long time. That's the easy part. The hard part is getting everyone on the same page, everyone in the same direction and thinking the same thing. That's what these OTA days were for and that's what training camp's for."

    On WR Brandon Marshall

"Brandon's looked very good. The thing that Brandon did over the last couple weeks is he's gotten in pretty good football shape. He's worked with (Head Strength and Conditioning Coach) Rich Tuten. One of the reasons we had him work out as hard as we did, coming off as thigh bruise, was it takes a while to get back into football shape. A lot of times you come back too soon and you pull a groin or a hamstring or re-injure the quad. To work as hard as he's worked the last couple weeks, I think has helped him over the last couple days and he's looked pretty darn good."

On if Marshall will play Monday

"I'm not sure. If it was a game situation, he would probably be able to play the Monday night game, but obviously we wouldn't put him in that situation only practicing a couple days and put him in a game situation so he will not play Monday night. He will go through normal practices against Dallas. We'll see how he looks and he'll probably get some playing time against Dallas."

On looking forward to preseason games

"That's what it's (the preseason) for, a chance to evaluate your players and that's what they've been looking for, this opportunity to show what they can do in a game situation. It's hard to tell all the time when they're just practicing against each other. You get a feel, but some guys really step up when the lights go on and other guys go the other direction. You're always hoping to find guys that enjoy the spotlight and enjoy the opportunity to prove themselves, and that's what these preseason games are for."
