All defensive coordinators do is study offenses. DCs know more different offenses than any OC. Offensive coaches know what they know and run what they know. If they are interested in expanding their repertoire, they attend coaching clinics or spend time with a coach who runs what they want to know. A good, experienced former DC who is a HC will know exactly what style of offense he wants because he knows what is difficult to defend.

When talking to OCs I usually judge them based on their eagerness to talk to a DC to learn. OCs love talking to each other about how great they are, and talking about the next great thing, but only the good ones sit down with defensive coaches to understand what works and why?

In his press conference he stressed playbook balance, and not just run/pass balance. So, he probably wants an innovative mind, who doesn't go pass happy with a nonsense QB like we did this year.

Right. Balance within the rushing attack means both zone, angle and misdirection. Balance within the passing attack means lateral, vertical and intermediate.

Why would Munchak come in for OL coach ? He interviewed for the HC job and didnt get it. I cant see him leaving pitt without a step up .
